Cattle Ranching on the Chase

Gretchen Sammis worked tirelessly for decades to develop a legacy of Hereford cattle that was so renown, many buyers didn't bother to look at Chase cattle before buying!  They already knew they were getting the Best in the West!

Chase Ranch mother cows are healthy, beautiful and fiercely protective of their calves.  They are never dehorned, which helps them ward off predators like coyotes, bear and an occasional mountain lion!

Can you imagine anything cuter or brighter-white than the face of a newborn Hereford calf?  This one is certainly a whole lot better looking than long-time Chase ranch-hand "Spider" Holmgren!!  Love ya, Spider!

For weeks every fall, Gretchen Sammis and ranch partner Ruby Gobble would stay at the Chase Canyon Cow Camp Cabin while they gathered cattle from the high country and moved them down to the ranch for the winter.

The day's riding always began here at the Chase Ranch Tack Room where Quarter Horse grays, bays and sorrels were saddled by Gretchen and Ruby, members of the Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Ft. Worth, Texas!

Many Chase Calves saw their first light of day -- or night! -- in the frigid winter months at the Chase Barn and corrals, only to return a few months later to get branded, vaccinated, and tagged to track their lineage and growth.
